The intimate detail and exquisite
beauty of fishes and their environment has, for a
number of years, been the subject of Curtis
Atwater's artistic endeavors. His work attempts to
convey a sense of action and drama in an underwater
world.
Curtis is an avid fisherman who studies his subjects
first hand. Most ideas originate from actual
experiences on the water. Reference material is
gained through photography of fish species above and
below water. In spring before the algae blooms, he
tramps the shallows of streams and lakes. Later when
the water warms a little, he snorkels many lakes and
rivers throughout the province of Ontario. He has
traveled across Canada from Vancouver Island to
Newfoundland in a quest to catch and study fish
species in their natural environment. He will do
whatever it takes to find those fish whether it is
fishing for Chinook salmon and halibut 30 miles out
from Vancouver Island, tarpon fishing in Cuba,
Atlantic salmon fishing in New Brunswick, Muskie
fishing in Northwestern Ontario, Lake trout fishing
in the Yukon Territories, Pike fishing in Northern
Saskatchewan, Speckled trout fishing in Labrador, or
bone fishing in Turks and Caicos. It seems to be as
much fun catching and studying fish as it is
painting them in a believable underwater scene.
He has also been fascinated by the predators of the
animal world most significantly big cats and wolves. |

Curtis Atwater
It is a passion for fishing and a fascination with the
underwater world that led me to focus on painting gamefish. I
almost exclusively concentrate on the larger predatory gamefish,
with the muskellunge on the top of my list. The sheer sight of a
large Muskie following my lure to the boat is the most amazing and
unforgettable experience.
